Skin issues around your stoma
If you’re living with a stoma, good skin care is an essential part of your daily routine as it will help you to maintain healthy skin. But even with the best care, there can be times where the skin around your stoma becomes red, sore, or broken.
Stoma bag leakage
Your stoma bag is designed to stay fully sealed between putting it on and taking it off. But sometimes, despite your best efforts, you will still experience leakage.
Parastomal Hernia
Having a stoma can cause weakness in the area around it, which can lead to muscles bulging out. This will likely create a lump or swelling around or next to your stoma and is called a peristomal hernia.
Bowel Blockage and Obstruction
It is possible that you experience a partial or complete blockage of the bowel or a bowel obstruction after your ileostomy or colostomy surgery.
Bowel Problems
Constipation, loose stools, and diarrhoea are among the fairly common experiences after an ileostomy or colostomy surgery.
Stoma Retraction or Prolapse
When your stoma suddenly doesn’t stick out anymore but lays flat on the skin or has even sunken below skin level, it is called a stoma retraction. When it’s suddenly coming out too far above the level of your skin, you might be dealing with a prolapsed stoma.
